Lower Silesia is the northwestern part of the historical and geographical region Silesia and is situated in the middle part of the course of the river Oder. The capital of Lower Silesia is Wroclaw, it has an area of 19,946 km² and a population of 2,888,232 (2005).
The Lower Silesian Voivodeship was formed on January 1, 1999 from the former Wrocław, Legnica, Wałbrzych and Jelenia Góra Voivodeships and parts of Leszno and Kalisz, following a reorganization of the Polish local authorities.
