Vyborg (soot. Вы́борг, finn. Viipuri, sw. Wiborg) is a city in Northwest Russia in the Leningrad Oblast. It is located on the Gulf of Finland 120 km from St. Petersburg and 35 km from the state border too Finland away.

background

The beginnings of the city go back to the founding of the Vyborg moated castle by the Swedes in 1293. Until the beginning of the 18th century Vyborg belonged to Sweden and was considered both a trading city and a military base. In 1710 Sweden lost the city to the Russian Empire in the Great Northern War. From 1809 to 1917, Vyborg was on the territory of the Grand Duchy of Finland, which belonged to Russia, and then became independent Finland after the latter was detached until it came under Soviet control again in 1944 during World War II. To this day, the architecture of Vyborg is characterized by centuries of belonging to Sweden and Finland, and the preserved castle is the only water castle of European type in Russia.

getting there

Due to a manageable number of sights and the proximity to the tourist metropolis of Saint Petersburg, Vyborg is particularly suitable as a day trip destination.
