Big Five

When it comes to wildlife observation in Africa, one speaks of the Big Five, that is elephant, rhinoceros, buffalo, lion and leopard. In Sri Lanka "only" the elephant and the leopard occur. Nevertheless, the five big animal species are doing well for tourist reasons, here they are just defined differently: the elephant and leopard are joined by them Sloth bear as land animals, and the other two are large animals from the water: sperm whale and blue whale. These last two can only be observed off the coast, there are plenty of opportunities for whale watching in the port cities of the south. It is not uncommon to see elephants in Yala Park, allegedly around 350 animals live here, and the rangers know where they are. It gets more difficult with the leopards. The park is said to have a high density of leopards, there are said to be 35-40 animals, but they are quite shy and not particularly easy to recognize due to their camouflage. The nocturnal sloth bear is even rarer; although it is a predator, its prey is mostly insects.
