By plane

It represents the largest Christian church in the world, even higher than that of Saint Peter, to which the design of the dome and the square are inspired. It was consecrated on 10 September 1990 by Pope John Paul II, but the basilica in question is not a cathedral: this role belongs to the nearby Cathedral of St. Augustine, seat of the bishop of the Diocese of Yamoussoukro. During the consecration, the pope expressed his desire to build a hospital next to the basilica by laying the first stone, which still remains completely alone.
