The desert city Yazd is one of the most beautiful cities in the Iran. The city has countless mosques, mausoleums and other old Islamic and Zoroastrian buildings. In the city center there are thousands of narrow and winding streets where it is easy to get lost. The houses there are made of brown and white clay and are rather small. The city is an important center of the Zoroastrian religious community.

background

Yazd is the capital of the province of the same name. The city is an oasis on the edge of the Dascht-e Kavir and Dascht-e Lut deserts. Yazd is surrounded by mountains of the Zagros Mountains, which are over 4,000 meters high. The city is halfway between Isfahan and Kerman, about 700 kilometers southeast of Tehran.

Yazd and the surrounding area is a center of the Zoroastrian faith in Iran. The Zoroastrianism originated sometime between 1800 and 600 BC and during this time came through priest Zarathustra's breakthrough in ancient Persia, which is why he is also considered a founder of religion. Just as with the dating of his lifetime, there is no consensus as to the origin of Zarathustra. Some experts think it comes from what is now the Afghan part of Khorasan, from northeast Iran or even from Azerbaijan. The religion is strongly monotheistic with a world maker. A pair of ghost twins represents good and bad and this dualism is what shapes belief. Humans are the only living beings who can choose between good and bad and are asked to follow the path of truthfulness. Accordingly, the tenets of belief are good thoughts, good words, and good deeds. Today the many fire temples and towers of silence in the area are witnesses of Zoroastrianism. The latter were used for the special funeral ceremony of the Zoroastians. The deceased were placed on these platforms so that vultures could eat the corpses.

The city was founded on an oasis, it is located in the center of the Iranian highlands. In the traditional districts of the old town there are still traditional mud houses, the water is supplied by a QanatSystem, you can find bazaars, hamans, mosques and Zoroastrian temples. The city has been part of the UNESCO world cultural heritage.
