Zele is a municipality in East Flanders, located between Lokeren and Dendermonde.

Info

The municipality belongs to the Waasland and has 20,457 inhabitants (2008), of which a large minority (about 12%) are of immigrant and mainly Turkish origin.

History

Zele was first mentioned circa 800 when Charlemagne donated the territory to Sint-Ludgerus, founder of the abbey of Werden (Essen, Germany). The monks built a deanery in Zele before 1141 which, according to legend, was set on fire in 1452 along with the castle, the mill and half of Zele. In 1699-1704 the baroque Saint Ludgerus Church was built.

Arrive

By train

Zele has a station on the Dendermonde-Lokeren line. So you can easily go to Brussels, there and back via Dendermonde. There are two tracks in the Zele railway station; it is the only place between Lokeren and Dendermonde along the single-track line 57 where trains can cross each other. The trains preferably stop at platform 1, which is the side of the station building. The gravel platform 2, equipped with only one guardhouse, is only used if 2 trains have to cross each other. This is for both practicality and security reasons. In order to reach platform 2, due to the lack of a connecting tunnel, the tracks have to be crossed at ground level. This must be done under the supervision and guidance of the station staff.
