Swine earth - Zwijnaarde

boar earth is a part of Ghent and is located south of the city center, adjacent to Sint-Denijs-Westrem. Zwijnaarde has 6,822 inhabitants (2007).

Arrive

Zwijnaarde is known as a junction of roads, for example the cloverleaf of the E40 and E17 is located in Zwijnaarde. Another important road is the N60 that connects Ghent with Oudenaarde and Ronse.

To look at

  • The Zwijnaarde windmill - The stone belt mill, located on the corner of Heerweg-Noord and Tramstraat, dates from about 1700 and was originally an oil mill, later also a grain mill with a miller's house.
  • It Zwijnaarde Castle - The castle was built by the abbots of St. Peter's Abbey and was used from 1420 as a residence for the Counts of Flanders when visiting the abbey and Ghent. Until her death in 1526, it was also the temporary residence of Isabella of Habsburg, wife of Christian II, King of Denmark. It was destroyed during the First World War and rebuilt in 1922. The castle is privately owned.
