Zurich - Zúrich

Zurich (in German: Zürich; in French: Zurich; in Italian: Zurigo; in romansh: Turitg) is the most populated city in Swiss with a population of 400,000 inhabitants and 1,396,000 inhabitants in its metropolitan area. It is located on Lake Zurich that joins the Limmat River, in the central plain of Switzerland and close to the Alps. It is the financial center and cultural center of the country and is also one of the cities awarded the title of city with the highest quality of life in the world.

History

The Latin name of the city, Turicum, was used for a Roman customs station at Limmat, which has some remains today. The Alemanni, a Germanic tribe, settled in the 5th century.

While the Church used to rule early medieval Zurich, the Guilds ( Zünfte ) took power in 1336, establishing Zurich as an autonomous republic. The guilds have survived to this day, although their current function is primarily ceremonial. Zurich became the fifth canton of the Swiss Confederation in 1351, and has been its capital at times. However, Switzerland's famous neutrality and stability is somewhat modern, as many battles have been fought in and around Zurich. The canton lost the Old Zurich War between 1440 and 1446 against the confederation and was readmitted in 1450.

Ulrich Zwingli led the Protestant Reformation in Switzerland in the early 16th century. When the Thirty Years' War ended in 1648, the Holy Roman Empire lost its control over Switzerland, which for the most part has been independent ever since.

The 1830s and 40s saw a series of revolts and wars, including the Züriputsch , a revolt by conservative canton landowners against the city of Zurich and the Sonderbund War of 1847. In 1848, Switzerland adopted a constitution that established the country as a federal republic. While the government settled in Bern, many federal institutions, including the new Polytechnic University (ETH), have their headquarters in Zurich.

The Zurich Stock Exchange was founded in 1877 and the city became a financial center in the 20th century, as Switzerland remained neutral in the World Wars and was able to keep capital taxes lower than the great European powers. Although Switzerland has been excluded from NATO and the European Union, Zurich is today one of the most cosmopolitan cities in central Europe.

Zurich has a four-season climate typical of central Europe. The temperature in winter is usually around zero degrees, which means that the snow can linger or melt. Summers are warm with temperatures in the 20s (C) and occasionally in the 30s. Nearby mountains are significantly cooler than in the valley, and the snow lingers well into spring.

Zurich International Airport is located in the town of Kloten, 11 km northeast of Zurich. Zurich is the largest city in the Swiss Confederation by area and population. It is the financial center of Switzerland and the brokerage houses and headquarters of a large number of national and international companies. Because Zurich is the central node of the wide Swiss train network and it also runs the largest and busiest international airport in the country, it is usually the first place where tourists arrive. By train

Regular trains to and from other Swiss and European cities depart and arrive at Hauptbahnhof , the main train station, located in the city center at the end of Bahnhofstrasse, with easy access to public transport. The Zurich Hauptbahnhof (HB) is served by commuter S-Bahn commuter trains, InterCity (IC and ICN) connections through Switzerland, Italy, Germany's IC and ICE, France's Lyria and Austria's Railjet with some direct connections to destinations as far away in Eastern Europe as Budapest. While Switzerland itself does not have many high-speed lines, Zurich is connected to the high-speed rail lines of neighboring countries. National train tickets in Switzerland are available through the SBB website, although there are few discounts for early booking. Sometimes international tickets can also be purchased through SBB, but you can often get better deals through the DB website (German), the SNCF website (France), or the ÖBB and Trenitalia websites for Austria and Italy, respectively. All adjacent railroads have (sometimes significant) early-booking discounts on international trains, so if you know your plans well in advance, book early.

The train station and connecting underground mall have shops, restaurants and a grocery store that locals use when they need to shop on Sundays as they are not subject to closing time laws that would otherwise be in effect in the city. It also hosts a Christmas market and other events in the grand entrance hall.

By car

The region around Zurich probably has the highest road density in the country, which makes it very convenient for access. Security

Zurich, like all cities in Switzerland, is relatively safe. However, be on the lookout for thieves and pickpockets. Carry your wallet or purse safely, not in your hip pocket or outside backpack pocket. In particular, thieves are known to operate around Zurich's main train station. Don't lose sight of your bags for a moment.

Certain areas along the lake shore are frequented by young men who sometimes try to fight when drunk. Don't let them provoke you as they are likely to be there in large numbers and will use any excuse to attack you. You may also notice that many of these young people smoke something other than a cigarette. Switzerland is surprisingly lenient on these things, but it is no cause for alarm.

Public transport is very safe. You can use it without special precautions.

If you decide to ride a bike in the city, please understand that Zurich is a public transport city. Beware of tram tracks that can jam your wheel and send you flying into traffic, with the trams themselves running these tracks frequently (and can scare you into getting stuck on the track) and buses, which make frequent stops at the far right lane. In short, cycling in the city center should only be done by those with experience cycling in such traffic.

Gay and lesbian travelers

As the most liberal city in Switzerland (the socialist and green parties are doing very well here now), Zurich is the favorite place to live for Swiss (German-speaking) gays and lesbians. The Canton of Zurich was the second canton, after Geneva, to allow, for example, registered unions for same-sex couples. The city of Zurich is probably the place in Switzerland that offers the most open environment for gays and lesbians. Gays and lesbians do not need to take special precautions for their safety on the streets. However, it is always possible for random homophobic behavior to occur.

Health

Zurich has the highest density of pharmacies in the world. There are practically no particular health risks in the city. The usual vaccines for Europe are completely sufficient. Drinking water is among the best in the world, as about half of the water is obtained from water sources. Canton Zurich is a tick area, but the city is relatively safe.

The largest train stations in the city (including the main station and Stadelhofen) offer one hour of free wireless internet per station every 3 hours. You should be able to receive a text message for a single registration.

Cope

Remain Hauptbahnhof at the main train station provides urgent outpatient care for walk-in tourists. There is also a dentist on the ground floor of the station. For serious emergencies, go to "Kantonsspital", the university clinic that has an emergency room 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Tram stop "Universitätsspital" (look for the inexplicable statue of the golden boy in front of the building, then follow the red "Notfall" signs). They will not fire people with serious and urgent health problems. The ambulance phone number is 144, but the European emergency number 112 also works.

If you're on a budget, don't stay out too late - "N" night buses only run on weekends. When they run, they run only once an hour and you must buy a Nachtzuschlag for P. 5 of the machine and validate it before boarding. On working nights, there is no public transport after 12:30 (although there are still expensive taxis in case you get stuck).

Shops are generally closed on Sundays, including all supermarkets in the city except those at the main train station, Enge and Stadelhofen stations, and those at the airport which remain open.

Avoid arriving / visiting Zurich on May 1st. The city is on a Labor Day / May Day holiday. The trams don't run during the middle of the day, so getting around could be a problem. Also, there could be some minor violent outbreaks and damage to cars.

Zurich has two police departments, the Stadtpolizei Zurich, which is responsible for the city area, and the Kantonspolizei Zürich, which is responsible for the entire region. With approximately 1,800 and 3,000 officers, these corps are the largest in Switzerland. Although Zurich police officers will be happy to help you if you have problems or need directions, they are also notorious for approaching "suspicious" people to check their papers. This procedure is annoying but legal, as it will probably be difficult for you to prove that you were not acting suspiciously. Take a photocopy of your passport and your entrance ticket with you, keep calm and be polite and you are unlikely to have any problems.

• Baden: This city is known for its castle ruins and thermal baths. It takes 15 minutes by train to get there from Zurich.
• Greifensee: a lake and a village next to the nearby town of Uster. The village of Greifensee is within a very unspoiled and conservation area.
• Lucerne: probably the most popular destination in Switzerland. Go there to see the famous Chapel Bridge or the impressive transport museum.
• Rapperswil - located at the opposite end of Lake Zurich. A small and picturesque town, ideal for a stroll. It is possible to go by boat from Zurich.
• The Rhine Falls, the largest waterfall in Europe. It is located near Schaffhausen, which has a beautiful old town in the Renaissance style.
• Winterthur: About 25 minutes from Zurich, this city is worth visiting on a rainy day to visit some of its many museums. Technorama is the most popular, an interactive science center.

A little further, but also worth a day trip:

• Appenzell - The closest thing to the stereotypical image of Switzerland with wooden country houses and traditional clothing. An interesting visit is the cheese factory, where Appenzell cheese is made.
• Augusta Raurica - Near Basel, this is one of the best-preserved Roman sites north of the Alps.
• Bellinzona - Since the opening of the new Gotthard Tunnel in 2016, the Italian-speaking part of Switzerland is less than two hours away by train. Go to Bellinzona to see its three castles, which are listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
• Biel - Traditional watchmaking city. Visit the Omega factory to learn more about the watch industry.
• Chur: It is not only a pleasant town, but a good center for hiking or skiing in the mountainous Graubünden region.
• Freiburg: hometown of the famous Swiss fondue. A good choice if you want to take a short trip to the French part of Switzerland.
