Ōda is a city of the prefecture of Shimane, on the island of Honshū, the largest of Japan.

Understand

His district ofŌmori (大 森, To 10 km southwest of central Ōda, is a fantastic mining town which at its peak accounted for a third of the world's silver production. Ōmori and its surroundings have hundreds of silver mines of various sizes.

Reservations are not required but recommended due to the limited number of places per week. Meet at the Iwami Ginzan Heritage Center where a bus will take you to the mines. Despite the time, effort, and price, it's worth the cost to fully appreciate Iwami Ginzan.

Logo indicating tariffs 500 JPY. – Typically the first stop for visitors to visit the mines. This museum talks about the history of mining through artefacts, recreated scenes and interactive computers. It's a great place to prepare for whatever you're about to see.

Logo indicating tariffs 500 JPY. – An interesting Buddhist temple cut into the hillside and housing 500 sculpted Bodhisattva statues.
  • town  – It is a beautiful walk to cross this old town and its only street on the way to the main mine. There are various beautiful buildings restored as old merchant and samurai houses. It was once a very rich place. Several houses can be visited by paying entry individually or by purchasing a global pass.
  • Old courthouse  – Nowadays a public hall. Has 3D displays of the surrounding geography, very interesting. There is also a recreated scene of a scoundrel being sentenced. There must have been some crime during the rush for money. It's easy to imagine this place during the boom years as some sort of western with swords instead of guns.

There are few hotels in the immediate vicinity of Iwami Ginzan. Before it was a World Heritage site, few people outside Shimane knew about it, and therefore the infrastructure to accommodate large numbers of tourists is only under development (2007).
