At a glance

Agiassos preserves unchanged elements of traditional architecture and has been declared a traditional settlement. Although it is not a seaside settlement, it has a lot of tourist traffic during the summer months.

History

The 15th century must have been the beginning of the mass movement of the inhabitants of the settlements around Agiasos. From Pentili 17 families came and built houses in the area of Karya. The settlement that was created became known as "Agia Sion" and over the years evolved into "Agiasos". In 1701 Agiasos was endowed with a sultan's firman of innocence, that is, it was exempted from paying taxes and shortly afterwards the inhabitants of the surrounding villages, in order to obtain this privilege, began to move in groups to Agiasos. However, because the area of Karya was not suitable for habitation, as they were forced to build their houses in inaccessible places near the torrent, which often caused floods, the Agiasotes went to where today is the Holy Shrine of the Virgin and which at that time served as a cemetery . Another larger monastery was built and the village began to be organized around it in the form of the basin we see today.
