THE Abkhazia is an area in the Caucasus which is by law (de jure) Autonomous Republic of Georgia. The capital is the Sokhumi located in the Black Sea (Black Sea). The Greeks constituted the majority in the region in the early 1920s (there were 50,000), while until 1945 they were one of the main ethnic groups. From 1932 to 1939 the Greek-language newspaper Kokinos Kapnas was published. After the Second World War, the issue of the creation of an Autonomous Hellenic Republic of Colchis was raised, within USSR. Persecutions and displacements of Greeks in the area followed Central Asia, with the justification of the claim that was kept until 1959, that they had immediately cooperated with them Nazi.
Thanks to the protection of the mountain ranges, the coastal zone of Abkhazia has a subtropical climate, which made the region a popular resort during the Soviet era. How to get there
There are two land entry points to Abkhazia: One is from Russia, on the Ios River (near Sochi, via the Adler settlement), and the other from Georgia, on the Eguri / Ingur River (near Zugdidi). Its summer 2008 relations between the breakaway republic and the Tbilisi regime deteriorated.
