Kazan is its city Russia, its capital Tatarstan. This city is especially famous in Russia, as it is a center of Tatar culture. According to the 2010 Census, the population of Kazan amounts to 1,114,535 inhabitants. Most of the inhabitants of Kazan are Russians and Tatars. The history of the city begins in the Middle Ages with the founding of the Volga Bulgaria. Later in the same area the also Tatar Hanato of Kazan was founded. Kazan was occupied by the Russians in 1774. The occupation of the city led to the massacre of the Kazan Tatars. Thus Tatar culture was persecuted. During the reign of Tsarina Aikaterini II, the Tatars were allowed to build mosques in the city of Kazan, ending the persecution of Tatar culture.
