Orient yourself

The central district of Lisbon is called "Baixa" (Lower town) and extends from the riverside Place of Commerce (Praça do Comércio) to Rossio (officially Dom Pedro). To the east of the Lower Town is the Alfama Hill, a popular neighborhood founded by the Arab conquerors, while to the west rises the Barrio Alto Hill, which includes the Chiado district, known for its vibrant nightlife. Avenida da Liberdade starts from Restaurantores Square (Eleftherias Avenue), the equivalent of Rome's Veneto with five-star hotels and luxury shops.

Main attractions

  •   Cathedral (). The temple was built in 1150, 3 years after the conquest of the city by the Crusaders led by King Alfonso I of Portugal. It was destroyed by the great earthquake of 1755 and restored in 1930. The new building was inaugurated on May 5, 1940, the anniversary of the liberation of the city from the Muslims.
  •   Castle of Agios Georgios (Castelo de São Jorge) (with its buses line 37),  351 218 800 620. From 9am to 6pm. - Located at the top of the hill in the historic Alfama district, it offers the most beautiful views of the city and the Tagus River. Archaeological excavations have shown that a fort at the top of the hill has existed since the time of the Phoenicians and was later used by the Roman legions and the Moors. After the liberation of the city from the crusaders, the castle became the royal residence of its dynasts οίκου ντ'Αβίζ until the 15th century and was turned into a prison in the later years of Spanish rule. It was deserted after the earthquakes of 1699 and 1755. Its restoration began in 1940 and was completed at the end of the century. Visitors are directed mainly to the Odysseus Tower where there is a periscope that displays images of Lisbon on a giant screen.
  •   Belem Tower (Belém Tower) (tram no. 15 or bus lines 28, 714, 727, 729, e 751). - The landmark of the city. The tower was built in 1515 to protect the entrance to the port of Lisbon. It is considered a masterpiece of the local style "Manuelino" and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
  •   Monastery of the Hieronymites (Mosteiro dos Jerónimos), Praça do Imperio 351 21 362-0034. - Large monastery dating from the 16th century. It was built by order of King Manuel I to honor the discovery of the sea route to India by Vasco da Gama. The tomb of the seafarer is located in the church of the monastery. In 1389, Jerome monks took over the monastery and made it their main residence until the dissolution of the order in 1833. In 1983 the Monastery of Jerome was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Today it houses the 3 museums listed below:
  •   Berardo Collection (Berardo Collection Museum).
  •   Calouste Gulbenkian MuseumAvenida de Bern, 45A 351 21 782-3000. - This is the most important museum in Lisbon. It was founded in 1955 and is named after the Armenian oil tycoon Calouste Sarkis Gulbenkian who bequeathed his collection to the Portuguese state.
  •   Monastery of Karmo (Carmo Convention). Remains of the monastery and the church that belonged to the order of the Carmelites. The church dates from the 14th century. It was destroyed by the great earthquake of 1755 and was not rebuilt. The imposing ruins dominate the Lower Town from the top of Barrio Alto Hill and offer wonderful views of Agios Georgios Castle and the Tagus River.
  •   Fish tank (Lisbon Ocean), Esplanada Dom Carlos I. It is the largest aquarium in Europe and hosts over 25,000 fish
  •   Azulejos National MuseumRua da Madre de Deus, 4 351 218 100 340. The museum is dedicated to the art of "Azulezos", to painting, that is, to enameled ceramic tiles. This art is a legacy of the Moors who conquered Portugal in the early ninth century AD. The Museum is housed in the historic convent of Madre de Deus (16th century) and records the history of Azulej art with exhibits in chronological order from Moorish tiles to those of the 20th century. Admission 5 €.

  •   Casa do Bikos (Casa dos Bicos), Rua dos Bacalhoeiros 10 (Alphabet). This is the residence (Casa) of the first ruler of the Portuguese colonies in India. The building was built in 1523 and stands out for the carved bricks of the facade (Bicos) to which it owes its name. Today is the headquarters of the José Saramago Cultural Foundation 3,00 €.

  •   Carriage Museum (National Museum of Coches), Avenida da iandia nº 136 351 210 732 319. various carriages in many types and rhythms. The collection with the royal carriages is housed in an adjacent building with entrance from Piazza Alfonso da Albuquerque
  •   Museum of Fashion and Design (Museum of Design and Fashion), Rua Augusta 24 (Lower Town),  351 218 886 117, 351 218 171 892, e-mail: . 10 am 6pm. presents a panorama of Haute Couture and design with exhibits dating from the 20th century onwards. You will see models of famous designers such as Christian Dior, Yves Saint Laurent, Vivienne Westwood and others.
  •   Amalia Rodriguez Museum (Casa Museu de Amália Rodrigues), Rua de São Bento 193 351 213 971 896. The museum is housed in the house where the famous singer lived until her death in 1999 5 €.
  •   Puppet Museum (Puppet Museum), Rua da Esperança 146 351 213 942 810fax: 351 213 942 819. Visiting hours: 10am 1pm and 2pm 6pm. It is housed in a monastery of 1755 (Convento das Bernardas)

Temples

  •   National Pantheon (Panteão Nacional) (Alphabet). It is housed in the Church of Santa Engrasia, which has been converted by government decree of September 26, 1836 into a burial ground for the most important citizens of Portugal. Singer Amalia Rodriguez, some writers and politicians are buried in the church.
  •   Estrella Basilica (Basilica of Estrela), Praça da Estrela. Catholic church built in 1790 in the Lappa district and dedicated to the Blessed Heart of Jesus (Santíssimo Coração de Jesus)
  •   Church of St. Vincent outside the walls (Igreja de São Vicente de Fora), Largo de São Vicente. The church was built in 1627 by the Italian architect Filippo Tertzi and later became the burial place of the members of the Royal House of Braganza who ruled Portugal until 1910.

Entertainment

  •   Da Luz Stadium (Near the "Colégio Militar / Luz" metro station of the Azul line). It was built on the site of the old Benfica stadium and inaugurated on October 25, 2003 with the friendly match between Benfica and the Uruguayan Nacional.
