History
Ancient Mithymna, whose position is located in the same position as the modern one, was a rival city of Mytilene and all the other cities of the island as the only Attic.

What to see
- Castle of Mithymna. It is built on the remains of the ancient fortification, at the top of the hill. It was founded during the Byzantine times, according to a version in the 6th century during the reign of Emperor Justinian, known for his building activity. In 1128 it was conquered by the Venetians and from 1204 to 1287 it was under the occupation of Baldwin II of Flanders. According to another view, the castle was built after the middle of the 13th century in order to be able to deal with the Turkish and Frankish invaders. However, at the end of the 13th century it passed into the hands of the Catalans. In 1373, Gatelouzos Frangiskos I brought reinforcements and repairs to the castle. The current form of the castle is a result of the works of the 14th century and the Ottoman additions after 1462.
