THE Stockholm is its capital Sweden.

At a glance

It is located on the east coast of the country and at the entrance of Lake Melaren. Its name means "city between bridges" and the first written mention of the name was in 1252. The population of the Municipality amounts to 1,021,504 inhabitants (2015), while in the urban area it reaches 1,372,565 inhabitants (2010) and is its largest city Sweden. As the capital, Stockholm is the seat of the Government and its parliament Sweden. It is also the residence of the head of state, Karolos Isti Gustavos. The city spans eleven municipalities. The central parts and many of the inner suburbs belong to the City of Stockholm.

Areas of Stockholm
Normalm (Norrmalm) (contains the Skeppsholmen)
The central shopping area, also known as City, includes many museums, hotels, restaurants, shops, a casino, the Royal Opera House, the Concert Hall and other concert and event venues, and the main train and bus stations. Includes the Skeppsholmen, an island known for its museums.
Βασαστάν (Vasastan)
An urban area with the Stockholm City Library, the observatory, and many second-hand shops.
Oostermalm (Ermstermalm) (Gärdet, Norra Djurgården, Värtahamnen)
boulevards, Stockholm Harbor National Park and several passenger ferry terminals, the Stureplan with expensive shops and nightlife, the tower Kaknäs, Stockholm University, the Royal Institute of Technology, and several museums.
Durgarden (Djurgården)
An island - park with attractions such as the open-air museum Skansen, the amusement park Gröna Lund, the museum Vasa, the museum ABBA and the palace Rosendal.
Gamla Stan (Gamla Stan) (Riddarholmen, Helgeandsholmen)
The old town, an island dominated by royal palace and Swedish Parliament. The rest of the island is a picturesque collection of old houses and narrow streets. The adjacent island Riddarholmen has an important church and various government buildings.
Sodermalm (Södermalm) (including Reimersholme, Långholmen)
an island with buildings from all eras.
Kungsolmen (Kungsholmen) (including Stora Essingen, Lilla Essingen)
An island in the west inner city, with Stockholm City Hall on its east side. Further west, there is an area with relaxed bars and restaurants. West of the transport junction Fridhemsplan the island is more suburban. It has many parks and beaches.
Wasterworth Solna and Sudbemberg (Västerort, Solna and Sundbyberg) (Bromma, Kista etc)
The airport is located in the western suburbs Stockholm-Bromma. The Vällingby, was built in 1950, and is one of the first organized suburbs in Europe. THE Solvalla is a racecourse. THE Kista, the center of information technology, includes the two unique skyscrapers in Stockholm. Solna and Sundberg, north of Stockholm, are two independent cities,
Schoenterort (Söderort)
The southern suburbs of Stockholm include the Stockholm International Fairs and Woodland Cemetery, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Lindingo (Lidingö) (including Fjäderholmarna)
A suburban island east of Stockholm, it includes the sculpture museum From Millesgården, the ski slope Ekholmsnäs, and Elfvik an estate with for array of conference hotels.
