importance
The village is shaped by two important artists: on the one hand by the architect and art professor Ramses Wissa Wassef (رمسيس ويصا واصف, 1911–1974) and on the other hand by the artist Adam Henein (آدم حنين, Born 1929).
The Carpet weaving with predominantly local motifs began in el-Ḥarrānīya. After an earlier test phase, the architect, born in Cairo in 1911, founded Ramses Wissa Wassef Here in 1951 an arts and crafts school with a focus on carpet weaving for children and young people, which also includes accommodation and a school. His idea was that these children could use their innate creativity and imagination here in carpets. Wissa Wassef originally wanted to become a sculptor, but later changed his mind and studied architecture at the Parisians Ecole des Beaux-Arts. He became a pioneer of modern adobe architecture and transferred traditional Egyptian architectural concepts to modern buildings. He also taught as a professor of art and architecture at the College of Fine Arts in Cairo. After his death, his daughters continued to run the Ramses Wissa Wassef Art Center he founded.
The carpet weaving training set school in the truest sense of the word. Nowadays there are such facilities in various places in Egypt. The unique pieces with the traditional, sometimes naive motifs are a popular souvenir that you can buy on site or from dealers all over Egypt.
Adam Henein, real name Samuel Henry,صمويل هنري, One of the most renowned sculptors and painters in Egypt, was one of Wissa Wassef's students. Born in 1929 as the son of a goldsmith, Henein graduated in 1953 with a Bachelor of Art degree. He achieved great popularity at a young age. He later continued his studies and work in Luxor, Munich and Paris. After a quarter of a century he returned to Egypt and specialized in granite carving. He is the founder and organizer of the annual in Aswan taking place International Sculpture Symposium.
