learn
Most parts of Niger are not safe for any travel. The capital Niamey and even this city are dangerous. The area near the Malian border is basically lawless. Islamists linked to the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) terrorist organization Al Qaeda control the area of Mali bordering Niger. Some Western tourists were kidnapped, and at least two people were killed by a branch of Al Qaeda. Agadez has been in a state of turmoil for many years, and sometimes the government needs special permission to travel in the area and escort the army to the convoy. The violence in eastern Niger was caused by criminal and extremist groups transiting from Nigeria, and the Niger government recommended armed escorts when traveling in the area. The risk of kidnapping is higher in southwestern Niger, especially in areas bordering Mali and Burkina Faso. As of March 2018, a state of emergency and curfew have been implemented in the Diffa area in southern Niger. The state of emergency is also in force in the Nigerian country that borders southern Niger.

Language
The official language of Niger is French, but few people use it outside of Niamey, and you may not even expect to talk to traders in the market. Local languages include Djerma (mainly spoken in Niamey and the bordering regions of Tillaberi and Dosso), Hausa, Fulfulde and Tamashek (speaking Tuaregs in the north) and Kanuri (speaking Beri Beri). Outside of the American Cultural Center and several large hotels in Niamey, English is useless. However, you will find English-speaking people in border towns on the Nigerian border, such as Birni N Konni and Maradi. These people usually travel from Nigeria to the South and generally want your things. Although they may be friendly, they always listen to a professional guide speaking English. If you learn 20 phrases in the local language, you will be highly respected. Just greet people in the local language to make your journey smoother than you think.
