Brief history
On October 12, 1968, after a referendum, Equatorial Guinea formally declared its independence and established the Republic of Equatorial Guinea, with Masie Nguema as its president. Massier claimed to be a Marxist and declared the "National Workers' Unity Party" as the only political party. This resulted in the loss of a large number of skilled foreign workers and a sharp economic decline.
On August 3, 1979, Lieutenant Colonel Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo, the deputy minister of the National Revolutionary People’s Armed Forces, launched a military coup to overthrow the Masier regime and establish the supreme leader headed by him. Military committee.
In November 1991, Equatorial Guinea passed a new constitution by referendum, allowing a multi-party system.
