Ágios Nikólaos (Άγιος Νικόλαος) is a small town in the east of the island Crete.

getting there

By plane

The airport of Heraklion is about 60 km away from Agios Nikolaos and can be reached by bus and rental car. The airport of Chaniá is much further away and can also be reached by bus (but with a change in Heraklion) and by rental car. Something closer Sitia in the east of the island has a regional airport, which is mainly served by small planes from Greece. However, since 2018 there have also been a few international connections.[1]

In the street

There is a well-developed bus network on Crete. From Agios Nikolaos there are direct connections to Heraklion, Sitia, Ierápetra and Chersonisos as well as to many other places in Eastern Crete and with a change to all larger places in Crete. Much of the island has a well-developed road system.

By boat

  • Agios Nikolaos marina. For visitors who want to go to Agios Nikolaos with their own ship, there are berths in the marina, a total of 255 berths are available.

One way to get around is by public bus. The island's capital can be reached from the "Bus Station Agios Nikolaos" Heraklion can be reached via the national road along the north coast. At the port of Agios Nikolaos a "little train" runs several times a day, which leads tourists through the city and the hinterland to the village of Kritsa. [2] Excursion boats depart daily from the harbor to the island of Spinalonga.

  • Agios Nikolaos Archaeological Museum. The second largest archaeological museum in Crete. It is above the lake on the road to the hospital.
  • Folklore Museum of Agios Nikolaos. It is located next to the tourist office on the bridge to the port.
  • Chapel of Agios Nikolaos. One of the oldest chapels in Crete.

Wednesdays (7 a.m. to 1 p.m.) is market day in Agios Nikolaos, the market starts behind the hospital and then continues on a road towards the lake. The road des begins near the bridge, also from the lake 28th of October as a pedestrian zone, here you will find a lot of souvenir shops and similar tourist trinkets. The street runs parallel to it Koundourou with slightly higher quality shops.
