Aegina, Greek: Αίγινα, also Aigina or Egina, is the second largest island in the Saronic Gulf with 87.4 km². Around 13,500 people live on it, the main town of the same name has around 8,000 inhabitants. Other places are Agia Marina and Perdika.

The island is named after the nymph Aigina. According to Greek mythology, she was kidnapped by Zeus and gave birth to a son named on this island Aiakos. He ruled as king on this island, he is also called the grandfather of the heroes Ajax and Achilles designated.

In 1828, Aegina was the capital of Greece for a short time.
