Ōtsu is the capital of the prefecture Shiga.

Ōtsu is on Lake Biwa, the largest lake in Japan. For a few years the city was under its then name Ōmi-kyōCapital of Japan. This is probably why the Enryaku-ji monastery and temples belong in Uji to the Unesco World Heritage Site Historic Kyoto.

German twin town is Wurzburg.

Enryahuji, great teaching hall
  • 2  Enryaku-ji. The monastery complex of the Buddhist temple is outside of Ōtsu in the mountains on the 1 Mount Hiei. It is part of the world heritage site Historic Kyoto. The temple can also be reached from Ōtsu with the help of a funicular, which starts at the station 1 Cable Sakamoto and ends near the temple at 2 Cable Enryaku-ji.
  • 3  Ōmi-jingū. The temple was established in 1940. There is also a clock museum on the site of the temple.
  • 4  Mii-dera. The Buddhist temple at the foot of Mount Hiei is also called Onjō-ji, with 40 buildings it is one of the largest temples in the country.
  • 5  Ishiyama-dera. The Buddhist temple was founded in 762.
