THE Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (Russian: Союз Советских Социалистических Республик), abbreviated to Ε.Σ.Σ.Δ. (Russian: СССР is pronounced according to DFA: [ˈɛs ɛs ɛs ˈɛr]), and more commonly the Soviet Union (Советский Союз), was a state located in East Europe and North Asia, the largest in the world. Its capital was Moscow. It was the first socialist state in world history. It was founded in 1922. It was dissolved in 1991. The Communist Party of the Soviet Union was, under Article 6 of the 1977 USSR Constitution, the guiding and nucleus of Soviet Society. Following its dissolution in 1991, the USSR was replaced by the Commonwealth of Independent States.
