Generally

All her work Egnatia Odos costs close to 6 billion euros. The tunnels alone cost close to 1.8 billion euros. Specifically, the project includes:

  • 63 nodes connected to the road network
  • 177 large bridges, with a total length of 40 km.
  • 350 upper and lower entrance-exit crossings
  • 73 tunnels with a maximum length of 4.8 km. and a total length of 50 km.
  • 43 river crossings
  • 11 intersections with railway lines

The area of influence and service gathers:

  • 36% of the total population of the country.
  • 33% of the total gross national product.

Bridges

The Egnatia Odos has 42 kilometers of bridges, which constitute 6% of the total length of the axis, as well as approximately 12% of the total cost. This is mainly due to the variety of the terrain, in combination with environmental conditions. These are twin bridges, with independent operators per traffic sector, according to the practice of the German motorways. For the construction of bridges, almost all modern construction methods have been applied.[2]

Tunnels

Egnatia Odos is one of the axes with the most tunnels in Europe. It has 73 twin tunnels with a total length of 50 km, which means that they constitute 7% of the length of the road axis are tunnels, while their construction cost is about 30% of the total construction cost of the Road. The tunnels are designed to 21st century standards. A crucial element of their design is the provision of transverse escape routes between the branches of the tunnel in case of fire. Also, special weight is given to the installation of high standards of monitoring system and control in general of the safe operation of the tunnels. The cost of the tunnels ranges from 8,000 euros per meter of length to 30,000 euros per meter of length [3]. The most important constructed tunnels:

  • Driskou Tunnel (4,600m)
  • Metsovo Tunnel (3,500m)
  • Dodoni Tunnel (3,360m)
  • Paggaio Tunnel (2,400m)
  • Kastania Tunnel (2,225m.)
  • Anilio Tunnel (2,100m)

Problems

Deadly bear crossings

Egnatia Odos is also known as the road where many bears try to cross it, due to the absence of sufficiently strong protective railings along the road. Due to the lack of measures, dozens of bears have been killed since the highway was opened to traffic. According to a report, only in the first 9 months of 2012, 8 bears lost their lives, while the same source stated that the brown bears (Ursus arctus) that have remained in Greece are estimated at only 250.
