Since 2014, the area of the Kilkis Regional Unit has become the only exit point for refugees from Hellas. In 2015, the UN High Commissioner for Refugees established the Eidomeni camp, which hosts up to 7,000 refugees, while in 2016, a non-governmental organization has been set up outside the UNHCR. Polykastro on her PATHE, which hosts up to 1,000 refugees. Thus, the Kilkis Regional Unit of 80,000 inhabitants will host up to 36,000 refugees from Syria and Iraq, as well as immigrants from Afghanistan, Pakistan, Morocco etc., thus making it the main place of residence of refugees trapped in Hellas on their way to Central and Northern Europe. Finally, in 2016, there are 2 state settlements in the area (Nea Kavala and Hersos) and three private ones (Eidomeni, Evzonon and Polykastro) with a total population of over 22,000.
