Koukounaries beach in Skiathos

THE Skiathos is a pine-covered island located in the Aegean Sea. It belongs to Northern Sporades and belongs to the prefecture of Magnesia.

Generally

Skiathos is the closest to Volos island of the Northern Sporades. It is 41 nautical miles from the capital of the prefecture of Magnesia, Volos and only 2.4 miles from the south coast Pelion.   • Lalaria beach with its special natural beauty is considered as one of the attractions of the island. It is accessible by boat from the port of Skiathos.
  • The Bourtzi. It is a small peninsula - a hill that separates the old from the new port. In the past there was a medieval castle. At the top of the hill there is a refreshment room and an open-air theater in which theatrical performances, concerts, and generally various cultural events are organized in the summer.

  • Pine cones. The most popular beach of the island, is located at the southwestern tip of the island. It is considered one of the best beaches in Europe. The forest of Koukounaria reaches the beach and together with the lagoon Strofilia, which is located in it, is a protected wetland.

By car

The buses in Skiathos operate 3 main routes. The main route connects the capital with Koukounaries (14 km southwest of the city are covered in about half an hour) making 24 stops: 0. Skiathos, 1. Delta, 2. Platania, 3. Slaughterhouses, 4. Acropolis, 5. Megali 'Ammos , 6. Mykitas, 7. Vassilias, 8. Vrysi, 9. 'Agios Taxiarchis, 10. Achladies, 11. Sklithri, 12. Tzaneria, 13. Vromolimnos, 14. Kolios, 15. Makry Katalima, 16. Agia Paraskevi, 17 Poros, 18. Illustrator, 19. Troulos, 20. Amoni, 21. Maratha, 22. Mandraki, 23. Strofilia, 24. Agia Eleni, 25. Koukounaries. It leaves every 20 minutes and the ticket is extremely cheap (less than 2 Euros). Keep in mind that during the summer on the way back, between 18:00 and 21:00 the bus is usually full. However, if you have no other way to return to Skiathos, go to the next stop from Koukounaries on foot and take the bus coming from the beach. The other two itineraries include one to Xanemos in the northeastern part and another to the Monastery of Evangelistria in the northern part.

By boat

Last, but not least, are the boats, the small boats that operate as taxis, and transport tourists to the beautiful parts of the island. By boat you can not only visit popular (Achladies, Vromolimnos) or secluded beaches (Kastro, Lalaria, Aselinos, Kechria), but also uninhabited islands (Tsougrias) or the neighboring islands of Skopelos and Alonissos (departure 09:30 from 10.00 in the morning and return at 17:00 in the afternoon). If you do not have a problem with nausea, then go by boat because it is a very beautiful experience, to cross the sea and if you are lucky enough to see dolphins!

What to see

  1.   House of Alexandros Papadiamantis (Papadiamanti Street, 100 meters from the beach in a narrow right.). Skiathos is the special homeland of the famous writer Alexandros Papadiamantis (1851-1911). The preserved house where the artist lived, which the visitor can enter, is one of the most important attractions of the island, and is located in the town of Skiathos.
  2.   Skiathos Castle (On the north side of the island). The medieval settlement of the island was abandoned in 1829. 3 churches and a house are kept in good condition, the rest of the buildings are in ruins.

The Castle - protector from pirates

You will discover it at the northern tip of the island. From the 14th century it protected the Skiathos from pirates. Today, you can still feel its mysterious atmosphere enveloping you. Here, the art is alive in 2 of the 22 old churches that survived: magnificent frescoes in the Genesis of Christ and built-in ceramics in Agios Nikolaos.
