THE Tiraspol the Tiraspol is a city in Transnistria and is its capital and largest city. It is located on the east bank of the Dniester.
At a glance
The modern city was founded in 1792 by the Russian general Alexander Vasilyevich Suvorov. The population is estimated at 133,800 inhabitants (2014). The population of the city was about 190,000 in 1989 and about 203,000 in 1992. 41% were Russians, 32% Ukrainians and 18% Moldovans. As a result of the political and economic situation of the city after the declaration of independence, as well as the immigration of the Jews, the population of the city decreased in the 2004 census to 158,069 inhabitants.

Establishment
THERussian Empire originated in the Dniester, conquering territories of the Ottoman Empire. In 1792, the Russian army built some fortifications to guard the western border near the Moldavian village of Suklio. General Alexander Vasilyevich Suvorov is considered the founder of modern Tiraspol. Its statue is the most characteristic attraction of the city. The city took its name from Tyra, the Greek name of the river Dniester. In 1828, the Russian government set up a customs office in Tiraspol to curb smuggling.
USSR
After the Russian Revolution, the Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic of Moldova was established in Ukraine in 1924, with Balta as its capital. Its official languages were Romanian, Ukrainian and Russian. The capital was moved in 1929 to Tiraspol, which remained the capital until 1940.
In 1940, following the secret negotiations of the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact, the USSR forced Romania to give herBessarabia. It included Tiraspol, until then part of it USSR of Ukraine in the newly formedMoldovan SSR. On August 7, 1941, after the Axis invasion of Soviet Union, the city was occupied by Romanian troops and the city remained under Romanian occupation. Almost the entire Jewish population of the city died or was killed or sent to concentration camps.
The city was recaptured by the Red Army on April 12, 1944 and became part of it again Moldovan SSR.
Transnistria
On January 27, 1990, the citizens of Tiraspol voted in a referendum declaring the city an independent territory. On September 2, 1990, Tiraspol was declared the capital of the newly formed Soviet Socialist Republic of Moldovan Transnistria. Following the break-up of the Soviet Union, the region east of the Dniester was declared an independent state as the Transnistrian Republic (PMR), with Tiraspol as its capital. The state was not recognized by the international community except for a few states.
