In the 9th century, Kievan Rus, as the country of the Eastern Slavs, was once very strong until it was divided in the 12th century. Since the middle of the 14th century, Ukraine has been ruled by the Golden Horde, the Kingdom of Poland, and the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. After the Great Northern War (1700-1721), Ukraine was divided by other forces. In the 19th century, most of Ukraine belonged to the Russian Empire, and the rest was the territory of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. During the chaotic period of World War I and the Russian Revolution, Ukraine briefly became independent from 1917 to 1921. After the Ukrainian Civil War, Soviet Ukraine became one of the founding republics of the Soviet Union in 1922. Then until the end of World War II, the territory of Ukraine expanded to the southwest. In 1945, Ukraine became one of the founding countries of the United Nations.

After the disintegration of the Soviet Union in 1991, Ukraine regained its independence and became one of the initiators and founding countries of the Commonwealth of Independent States. The reform towards a market economy has brought Ukraine into an eight-year economic recession, but it has also experienced excessive growth. Ukraine is currently one of the most important markets in the world and is the third largest food exporter in the world. Ukraine has inherited the power of the Soviet Union and maintains the second largest military power in Europe after Russia.

Ukraine has 24 provinces and a special city (the capital, Kiev). 78% of the population are Ukrainians, and the rest are Russians and Romanians. The official language of Ukraine is Ukrainian, and the main religion is the Orthodox Church.
