history
Sao Tome and Principe was killed between 1469 and 1472PortugalPeople found out. Alvaro Caminha (Alvaro Caminha) successfully established a colony on São Tomé Island in 1493, and he also received this land as a reward. The colonization of Principe began in 1500 under a similar arrangement. Portuguese colonists used the labor of slaves to turn São Tomé and Príncipe into the most important sugar exporter in Africa in the mid-16th century. Sao Tome Island has been directly under the rule of the Kingdom of Portugal since 1522, and Principe has been under the rule of the Kingdom of Portugal since 1573.
The sugar industry declined in the next hundred years. By the middle of the seventeenth century, Sao Tome was just a port of call for supply ships. In the early nineteenth century, two cash crops were introduced: coffee and cocoa. The local fertile volcanic soil is particularly suitable for these new cash crops, so many estates appeared (Portuguese: {{Lang|pt|roça]]). Estates owned by Portuguese companies or non-local landlords occupy almost all the good farmland in the area. By 1908, Sao Tome became the world's largest cocoa producing area, and cocoa is still the country's most important crop.
