The Sahel stretches 3,862 km from the Atlantic coast of Mauritania in the west to the Red Sea coast of Sudan in the east. This ecoregion also includes parts of other countries, but for this travel guide, it includesChad, Mali, Mauritania, NigerwithSudanThe whole territory. The entire area is composed of semi-arid grasslands, savannas, grasslands and thorn bushes (in the Sahara Desert in the north and the Sahara Desert in the south)Central AfricaBetween the trees in the grassland).

The topography of the Sahel region is relatively flat, and the elevation of the entire region is basically between 200 and 400 meters.

history

Throughout African history, this region is home to some of the most advanced kingdoms that benefited from the desert trade. All this series of similar countries based on the Sahel region are called "Sahelian Kingdoms". The wealth of these countries comes from controlling the trans-Saharan trade route through the desert. Their power comes from large animals such as camels and horses. They are fast enough to keep a large empire under central control and are also useful in battle. The first large Sahel kingdom appeared after 750 and supported several large trading cities in the Niger Meander region, includingTimbuktuGaoheDjenet

climate

The annual precipitation increases from about 200 mm in the north of the Sahel to about 600 mm in the south.

Safety

Travel warningwarn:Large areas of the Sahel are still not safe tourist destinations. An active civil war continues in Mali, and al-Qaeda-related groups control most of northern Mali (including Timbuktu and Gao). Some Tuareg and Islamic factions have controlled remote areas of the Sahara for many years. They are sometimes responsible for the kidnapping and death of foreigners in Mauritania, Mali, and Niger.

Even according to African standards, Chad is still a very backward country and it is difficult to travel in the countryside. Violent crime and various crime/rebel factions also pose a danger to travelers.

Western Sudan is still dangerous for travelers. The ongoing conflict in Darfur remains active. Read the travel warnings on the web pages of the countries you plan to visit and consult the embassy for advice. (Update time: November 2012)
