In 1885, Germany occupied the Marshall Islands and was under the protection of German New Guinea. It was occupied by Japan during World War I and then under Japanese trusteeship. In 1944, the United States captured the Marshall Islands. After the war, the United Nations was commissioned by the United States to become one of the Pacific Islands trustees. Between 1946 and 1968, the United States established the Pacific Test Site and conducted as many as 66 nuclear test explosions on the Marshall Islands. In 1979, the Marshall Islands rejected the referendum on the "Constitution of the Federated States of Micronesia", establishing an autonomous government and preparing for the founding of the nation. In 1986, it signed the "Free Association Treaty" with the United States and declared independence on October 21 of the same year. In 1991, the United Nations terminated the trusteeship of the United States and accepted the Republic of the Marshall Islands as a member state.
