Akrotiri (Greek Ακρωτήρι) is a place on the archipelago Santorini. The name means cape or peninsula and indicates the location in the extreme southwest of the island Thira.

The place Akrotiri in the southwest of the island Thira is located on a hill and offers a beautiful view over the caldera. However, what is primarily known is the archaeological site of the Bronze Age settlement on the south coast of the island.

Overview
  • The Venetians left that on the hill in the center of the village in the 14th century 1 La Ponta Castle erect, the remains of which still exist. In the middle stood a tower called "Goulas", but it fell victim to the 1956 earthquake.
  • In 1892 a was built at Cape Akrotiri, the extreme western point of the island 2 lighthouse built. This is operated by the Greek Navy and is not accessible, but you can drive on a good road to Cape Akrotiri and from there you have a good view of the neighboring islands. There is not much parking right at the lighthouse.
  • 3 Excavation site At the entrance to Akrotiri, a road branches off to the excavation site to the south. After about one kilometer you will come to the chargeable parking lot, where the public bus also stops. Admission to the covered site is € 12 for adults (reduced € 6). Open daily in summer 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., in winter (from 1.11.) Tue - Sun 8 a.m. - 5 p.m., detailed information on the official website.
Note: The site reopened in April 2012 after being closed for years. At the time of the visit (May 2012), the infrastructure was not yet fully completed. Toilet facilities were available, information material was out of print, the souvenir shops were still closed.
