Megalochori is a small village in the south of the island of Thira, Santorini. It is inland off the road from Firá to Perissa and is surrounded by vineyards. Due to its location, the village has remained quite original.

background

Megalochori is like the other villages on Santorini a winding village with narrow streets, in which one can get lost. One often hears on the island that the many narrow streets and corners were created to make it difficult for marauding pirates to raid. In Megalochori people like to be convinced of this.

The two bell towers that span the main street are unusual, and the long walls behind which the unusually large houses are hidden are striking. They give an indication that in the village near the port of Athinios a number of traders had their residence, whose prosperity was in the trade in the famous dessert wine Vinsanto was justified.
