Perissa is a village on the southeast coast of the island of Thira,Santorini. It has a long beach with black lava sand and has become a popular seaside resort.

background

Perissa is the neighbor of Emporio. The small coastal town is located on the southern slope of the mountain range Profitis Elias with its offshoot Mesa Vouno and is thus protected from the prevailing north wind. The sandy beach bears the Blue Flag quality mark, it is only separated from the village by a little-used road, it is closed in the summer season. The black lava sand likes to get quite hot, so bathing shoes should be part of the tourist equipment, this is also recommended because of the existing pebbles. The beach is mostly used by younger people. It continues through the sections Perivolos and Agios Georgios up to Cape exomitis, it forms the southernmost point of the island of Thira.

At the foot of Mesa Vouno, the remains of an early Christian church were discovered, it was consecrated to St. Irene, the namesake of Santorini.
