The Santorini Airport(Greek: Κρατικός Αερολιμένας Σαντορίνης), after the Greek name of the island also as Thira Airport known, lies on the east coast of Santorini
background
The airport is about 8 km southeast of Firá and immediately north of the village Kamari. It was originally only used for military purposes, but in 1972 it was also opened for civil aircraft. However, take-offs and landings only take place during the day, and there is little noise in the nearby villages of Kamari, Perissa and Messaria. The runway is relatively short and not particularly wide, so that Santorini is only approached with smaller planes.
getting there
KTEL buses run regularly from the main town of Firá to the airport. Most tourists, however, are brought to and from their accommodations by shuttle buses. If this service is not offered free of charge, transportation by taxi is often the faster and cheaper alternative.
Airlines and destinations
Outside the tourist season, Santorini is only accessible from Olympic Air and Aegean Airlines in the holiday season charter planes from numerous European countries land here. There are both direct connections and flights with stopovers in Athens, Thessaloniki or on Crete.
