Alessio (Lezhë, or Lezha) is a city of Coast of Albania.
To know
The name of the city of Alexis is due to the name Lissos as a Greek colony (Λισσός). The Romans then conquered the city and the Greek name was translated into Latin Lissus. In Albanian language it is called Lezha or Lezhë. In the local dialect "ghego" the forms Lesha and Lesh are common. By the Venetians, the city was called Alessio in Italian.
Geographical notes
The city is located in the narrowest part of the Albanian coastal plain just 3 km from the Adriatic coast, about 50 km north of the capital Tirana and on the banks of a small secondary river of the Drin. To the west of the city lies the wetland of Kune-Vain with the Drin estuary. Just west of the city is the Kune-Vain Nature Reserve-Such, which begins between Alessio and in the northwestern port city St. John of Medua, is over ten kilometers along the Adriatic coast. Kune-Vain-Tale is a wetland characterized by numerous lagoons and marshes.
When to go
Thanks to its geographical position (overlooking the sea and a few meters above it), Alessio has a prevailing temperate Mediterranean climate. The Alessio district is characterized by hot and dry summers, mild and humid winters in the lower part and in the city, while wet and cold winters in the mountainous area. On average, it has temperatures of 7 ° C in January and 24/25 ° C in July.
Background
The city was founded by Dionysius I of Syracuse in 385 BC. Around 335-330 BC the construction of the fortress was completed, which made Alessio one of the most protected cities of Illyria.
Over the centuries Alessio has been known by various names: Lis, Lissus, Lisos, Alessio, Lesh, Lezhë.

- Tomb of Skanderbeg. The main monument of the city, which has been plundered several times, is housed within the remains of a ruined church. The tomb consists of a simple stone slab with the copy of the sword and helmet (the originals are in a museum in Vienna). Near the church there are remains of buildings from the Roman era.
- Alessio Castle (Fortress of Alessio). Overlooking the city you have an excellent view of it and the coast, where you can admire the ruins of ancient and Ottoman times. The current appearance of the fortress is due to the restructuring of 1515-1521, which was commissioned by Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent. During excavations in 1966 a mosque was also discovered.
- St. Nicholas Cathedral (Mausoleum of Castriota).
- Church of the Madonna Annunciata (Kisha Zoja Nunciata). Over 800 years old Franciscan church on the hill overlooking the city.
