Geographical notes
San Giovanni di Medua is located at the northern end of a large gulf located 7 km from the provincial capital Alessio. South of the city is the lagoon area of the Drin River delta, which forms the Kuna-Vain-Tale nature reserve. Here there is a port opened in 2009 that connects the city to Bari. This place has a beautiful view with a fantastic sea which is surrounded by not very high mountains but with a particular rock. It can be seen that in recent years the city has undergone a great evolution where there has been a lot of construction work which has led to huge constructions.
When to go
Obviously the best time to go is summer.
Background
According to tradition, Julius Caesar landed here in the war against Pompey. In 1313 it was attested for the first time with the name San Giovanni di Medua, but in the Ottoman period it lost more and more importance like the nearby Alessio, being the center of trade moved to Shkodra is Ulcinj. Since the 1990s, the port (the only one in Albania north of Durres) has seen a revival of trade and the city beaches have seen a growing influx of tourists.

By plane
The only passenger airport is that of Tirana, from a distance of 50 km.
The city has a port, but it is only for freight, although it was briefly open for ferries.
By bus
In the summer months it is possible to take a bus between San Giovanni di Medua and the nearby town of Alessio. Travel between San Giovanni di Medua and Alessio costs 30 Lek and takes about 15 minutes.

Vans (or taxis) travel from San Giovanni di Medua to the nearby town of Alessio. The short van trip between San Giovanni di Medua and Alessio costs 50 Lek and takes about 10-15 minutes. Vans are the most common form of transportation in the area and are easy to spot.
