Almodovar del Río is a city in the Andalusian province of Cordoba. She belongs to the district (Comarca) Vega del Guadalquivir.

The small town Almodovar del Río is about 22 km southwest of Cordoba also on the Guadalquivir. According to excavations, it was settled in the Stone Age, and later a Roman oppidum stood here. It was under Moorish rule until the Reconquista. The name also comes from this time (Al-Muddawar means "The Round" and is an allusion to the prominent hill on which today's castle is located).

There is a medieval old town to see in the lively town center, but most visitors avoid visiting it and head straight to the towering castle complex.
