Alpnach is a Swiss Municipality in canton Obwalden.

The community is located at the end of the Alpnachersee, the western branch of Lake Lucerne, and consists of three localities Alpnach Dorf, Alpnachstad and Schoried.

The Brünigbahn from Lucerne above Meiringen to Interlaken, stops on Alpnachstad train station, where there is a connection to the Pilatusbahn.

By bus

In the street

There are two exits from the A8 motorway Alpnach North and Alpnach south. You can usually get there via the A2 (Gotthard motorway), from which the A8 connects to Branch Lopper branches off.

By boat

In Alpnachstad there is a landing stage for scheduled boats on Lake Lucerne.

Tourist Attractions

  • Pilatusbahn. The steepest cog railway in the world, the Pilatusbahn, begins in Alpnachstad and leads to the Pilatus. It only operates in summer.
  • St. Mary Magdalene. The parish church of St. Maria Magdalena in Alpnach was built between 1812 and 1820. The spire with its needle point dates from 1887. The church has a complicated floor plan, whereby the interior layout is different than it appears from the outside. It is built in the classical style.
  • St. Theodul. In Schoried, there is the St. Theodul chapel, which was built in 1711. In the interior there is baroque ceiling paintings, which show scenes from the life of the saint.
