Alta is a city in the Norwegian province Finnmark.

Alta is north of the Arctic Circle, the sun does not set from May 6th to July 26th, and the polar night lasts from November 24th to January 18th. Therefore, Alta is considered a good place to watch the Northern Lights in winter (Aurora borealis).

Rock carvings
Northern Lights Cathedral
- 1 Alta Museum (Verdensarvsenteret for Bergkunst), Altaveien 19, 9518 Alta. Tel.: 47 417 56 330. In the center of the museum are rock carvings, made between 6,200 BC. BC and 2,500 BC. A number of drawings were redrawn in color for better visibility. They have been part of the UNESCO world cultural heritage.
