MS Polarlys in Tromsø

The traditional route of the Hurtigruten leads from Mountains above Trondheim, Bodø, Tromso and Hammerfest to Kirkenes and back. Hurtigruten is the Norwegian name for The fast line. Since 1893, the Hurtigruten has been connecting the towns on the Norwegian west coast, which is over 2,700 kilometers long, as post ships. The ships are still an important part of the basic service, especially in the northern part of the route, and are therefore subsidized by the state.

The ports of Hurtigruten in Finnmark from south to north:

Øksfjord, Hammerfest, Havøysund, Honningsvåg, Kjøllefjord, Mehamn, Berlevåg, Båtsfjord, Vardø, Vadsø (only started in north direction), Kirkenes.

When planning a trip with the involvement of Hurtigruten, it must be noted that the arrival and departure times can differ significantly from the timetable, depending on the factors of passenger and freight volume and weather. Strong winds can even mean that ports are not called at all, but only one of the next ones on the route. The transport of the passengers to the unoccupied port then takes place at the expense of the shipping company by taxis or other means of transport.

climate

Depending on different doctrines, Finnmark can be divided into two (three) climatic zones, the boundaries of which merge into one another

  1. boreales Climate in the coastal region around the Altafjord.
  2. Tundra climate inland (Finnmarksvidda)
  3. sub-polar climate on the coast east of the North Cape to the Bering Sea)

The subpolar zone is not as pronounced because of the Gulf Stream (no permafrost).
