Hammerfest is a city in the north Norway. The city center is on the island of Kvalø, where most of the 10,000 inhabitants live. background

Map of Hammerfest

Hammerfest proudly calls itself the northernmost city Europe. This effective advertising title has actually been due since 1996 Honningsvåg, However, the two cities have agreed that Hammerfest can still advertise with this slogan. Whether Hammerfest is also the northernmost city in the world is a matter of controversy; Opponents throw in that the other towns are smaller. However, e.g. Barrow in Alaska also more than 4000 inhabitants.

The oil refinery

The name "Hammerfest" refers to the fastening of boats to a "Berghammer" on a steep mountain slope. There is evidence of a church in this place as early as 1620, when the settlement had around 60 inhabitants. Whalers and seal hunters used Hammerfest harbor as a base, from where trade with the Pomors driven, also the polar explorer Fridtjof Nansen started his expedition here.

In 1789 the place received city rights. Hammerfest is one of the oldest cities in Northern Norway. The city repeatedly experienced setbacks in its development. After a looting by the British in 1809, a small fortress was built at the port entrance. In 1890, a large part of the city fell victim to a fire, but the first electric street lighting in Northern Europe was installed in the following year. However, the lighting went out after a few minutes.

During the Second World War, the port of Hammerfest was used by the German Navy. When the German troops withdrew in November 1944, the city was almost completely destroyed and burned down, only the wooden grave church remained in the cemetery. The following years were marked by reconstruction. The economic basis was fishing and whaling. In recent years, a natural gas liquefaction plant has been built on the small island of Melkøya, which has created numerous well-paid jobs in Hammerfest, which have also made real estate prices soaring. Another important industry is tourism.

Hammerfest's city coat of arms features a white polar bear on a red background. However, visitors can rest assured that there are no polar bears in the city, but this is where the starting point for polar bear hunts was Svalbard, and for its 150th anniversary, the city received a coat of arms with this ubiquitous, but harmless animal in this form.
