In 1944 all houses on the island, except for the church from 1885, were destroyed by the German Wehrmacht. The reconstruction lasted until 1960.

Honningsvåg has been the northernmost city in the world since 1996. It is further north than Hammerfest, however, based on an agreement with the title northernmost city in Europe may decorate. This is because in Norway cities are supposed to have at least 5,000 inhabitants by law, but Honningsvåg invoked a passage in the law that states that once city rights have been granted, they continue to apply.

More than 110 cruise ships visit Honningsvåg every year because passengers want to visit the Nordkapp. In Norway only Mountains and Geiranger frequented by cruise ships. Current list of cruise ships in port.
