Altstätten SG is a city in the canton St. Gallen.

The city is located in the St. Gallen Rhine Valley. The first documentary mention took place in the year 853. In the 13th century the village received city rights.
Altstätten is still an important market place in the region today. Market day is always on Thursday (morning). In the summer months, the farmers' market also takes place on Saturday mornings. The main market in February is the “Liechtmässmaart” (fair market, fur market), in May the “Maia-Maart” (goods / vegetables / cattle), in August the “Augste-Maart” (goods / cattle and Kilbi) and finally in December the «Chlöösler» (Niklaus fair, goods / machines / cattle). The two train stations Altstätten SBB and Altstätten Stadt are connected to the bus routes RTB Rheintal bus connected.
In the street
Altstätten can be reached via the A13 motorway - from the direction of Sargans via exit no. 5 Oberriet and from the direction of Lake Constance via exit no. 4 Kriessern. Hauptstrasse 13 (Sargans-Rorschach) leads past the old town of Altstätten. A well-developed road leads over the Stoss (pass 943 m) from the Appenzellerland and also from Trogen over the Ruppen (pass 1'003 m) to Altstätten.
