Tourist Attractions

At the Aluthgama market
The market begins next to the cinema
  • In Aluthgama takes place on Mondays 1 market instead, it is quite original and tailored almost entirely to the needs of the local population.
Kande Vihara Temple Complex
Stalls for offerings
  • The 2 Kande Vihara is the main attraction of Aluthgama. This Buddhist temple stands on a hill a little inland. During the tsunami in 2004, numerous evacuated people were housed on its premises. As a result, the temple was rebuilt, and since 2007 it has been dominated by the country's largest figure of a seated Buddha. However, this figure was allowed to be extensively restored in 2014.
The temple was founded in 1734. It presents itself as a walled complex. In front of the entrance gate, traders sell fruit baskets as offerings, and a wall decorated with reliefs leads up to the temple grounds. As at the other temples, visitors have to take off their shoes, and a small donation is expected from non-Buddhists. In the temple there are three Buddha statues, which look the same to inexperienced visitors, in fact they differ in their posture, called Mudra. In the adjoining rooms you can also find statues of Vishnu and other Hindu deities, this is in Sri Lanka for Buddhists no contradiction. Other structures in the temple serve as apartments for the monks and for religious instruction. Of course, there is also a large Bodhi tree on the premises.
