The city of Beruwala is located south of Colombo in the Kaluta District in the Western Province. It is the capital of a subdistrict, which also includes the northern part of Payagala and the southern part Aluthgama with the temple complex of Kanda Vihar.
Already in the 8th century there was a branch of Arab traders who traded in spices and precious stones at that time. The successors of these Arabs, Moors called, are still mostly active in the gemstone trade today.
One of the most beautiful beaches in the country begins at Beruwala, it stretches from the mouth of the Bentota River for a length of 130 km to the south. In front of the coast is a coral reef that was badly damaged in the 2004 tsunami, but is now showing signs of recovery. Immediately further south, the hotel complexes start from Bentota. Several sections of the beach are visited by sea turtles to lay their eggs, and the nesting clutches should be taken into account.

- 1 Ketchimale mosque
- 1 fish market. The best time to visit (entry fee 50 LKR, also for local buyers) are the early hours of the morning when the boats arrive with their catch and offer their goods directly on the ship or in a small hall. However, one shouldn't be too sensitive because of the captured prey and the blood of the slaughtered animals.
- 2 Kanda Vihara, there is a large Buddha statue in the temple complex, see article Aluthgama

The beach in the south of Beruwala is well suited for swimming, as it slopes down quite gently into the sea. In some places the offshore coral reefs form real "bathtubs" in which you can walk to the reef. Where the coral reefs were damaged by the tsunami, there are sharp-edged fragments, please leave them behind and do not take them home!

security
- You can always count on "Beach Boys", these guys seem to appear out of nowhere, they are the "ideal" guides, know the best souvenir shops, the cheapest Tuc-Tucs and are difficult to get rid of. A conversation with these beach boys is also recommended, because the tours are usually better organized, without sales events and are usually cheaper. It is also here, as in the whole of Sri Lanka, without negotiations you always pay too much as a tourist. Like everywhere else, there are good and bad. It is therefore not advisable to go to the beach alone, especially in the evening hours.
- Watch out for any red flags on the beach.
health
- Ayurveda cures are also offered in most hotels.
- The small uninhabited island lies off the coast 3 Crow Island. There is a peculiarity of nature here. The sand of this island has a natural radioactivity in several places, which sometimes exceeds the permissible level for a permanent residence by four times.[1] Since holidaymakers are unlikely to stay on this island for more than three months, damage is not to be expected. There are no abnormalities in this regard among the locals either.
