How to orient yourself

Neighborhoods

  • Dapperbuurt a neighborhood of tenements from the late 19th century on whose main road (Dapperstraat) a traditional market is held among the most popular in Amsterdam. In the period between the two world wars, Jewish families settled in the neighborhood, as the 1928 synagogue on the Linnaeusstraat testifies. In the post-war years the district was in a state of neglect until it was the subject of a renovation plan launched in the early 1970s.
  • IJburg is the residential area at the eastern end of the district. The district, built on artificial islands of Lake IJ, has a checkerboard layout, the result of an urban plan drawn up since 1965 by the architects Van den Broek and Bakema. The plan was later abandoned but resumed, in part, only at the end of the century.
  • Indische Buurt
  • Omval The neighborhood on the east bank of the Amstel River, adjacent to the Amstel station. In 1987 the city council approved the construction project for three office skyscrapers named after Dutch painters: the Rembrandt Tower, the Mondriaan Tower and the Breitner Tower. The former is still the tallest building in Amsterdam today.
  • Oostelijk Havengebied (Eastern Docklands) A port area built at the end of the 19th century following the increased merchant traffic with the Dutch colonies of the time. Fallen into neglect in the years of the second post-war period, the old port warehouses were occupied by students and artists until a plan was created to transform the area into a modern residential district following the example of what happened in theEast End of London.
  • Watergraafsmeer it is a polder torn from the sea in 1629 after which it was filled with numerous country residences of which only one has managed to survive today.
