History

Most historians from Goiás recognize the beginning of the city's history with the accounts of the French traveler Auguste de Saint-Hillare, in the year 1819. The traveler quoted Marshal Raimundo de Cunha Matos, until then owner of Fazenda das Antas, which extended over almost the entire area where the municipality of Anápolis is located today.

Around 1850, the region began to be populated. Thus, a small village is formed on the banks of the Capuava Stream. According to reliable historical sources, in 1859 a woman named Ana das Dores was crossing the region with the image of Santa Ana on the back of one of her troop's horses. The animal that carried the image was lost, and the muleteers were unable to lift the image from the ground. Ana das Dores acknowledged that the saint wanted to remain in the place and promised to give it to the first Catholic temple to be built in the region.

Ten years pass and Gomes de Sousa Ramos, son of Ana das Dores, moves to the village and builds the Cathedral of Santana das Antas. In 1882, Prof. José da Silva Batista, who had been designated by the provincial government to manage the village. After many discussions with the government of Pirenópolis, the village was emancipated on July 31, 1907 through decree 320 signed by Miguel Rocha Lima, president of Goiás. On this date the city was renamed "Anápolis", which means City of Ana, a tribute to the religious Ana das Dores and to Santa Ana, the city's patron saint.
