The Andean region of the province of Río Negro lies in the west of the Argentine Patagonia on the border to Chile. It is densely forested and there are many lakes in its valleys, making the area one of the main tourist areas Argentina do.
Regions
While the north is dominated by Lake Nahuel Huapí and its tributaries, the valley dominates in the south El Bolson the scenery.
places
- 1 San Carlos de Bariloche, 120,000 inhabitants, highly frequented tourist metropolis in the area with summer and winter seasons, on the deep blue Nahuel-Huapí-Seeie-Mecca "well-known holiday resort in a charming valley
- 2 El Bolson, 20,000 inhabitants, hippie and nature lover colony in the south of the province near the border with Chubut, with an adjoining small ski area.
Other goals
The attraction are the national parks with their often almost untouched nature. Almost the entire area is under nature protection!
- 1 Nahuel Huapí National Park. Protects the area around the lake of the same name with its cold rainforests and volcanoes. Quite overrun with tourists.
- 2 Los Arrayanes National Park , Strict reserve in the immediate vicinity of the Nahuel Huapí National Park. Protects the exotic Arrayanes trees, unique in the world, access only by boat.
background
The southern Andes are very different from the Central Andes and from the Patagonian meseta. They are significantly lower (below 3,500 m, with the exception of a few volcanoes) and overgrown by a dense rainforest. Because of the cool climate, there is eternal snow and ice above 2,000 m. At the foot of the Andes there are many lakes, some of which are glacial lakes, with a multitude of rivers and streams in between.
Although the area is one of the main travel destinations for Argentines because of the impressive landscapes, the hype is largely in the areas around the main travel destinations San Carlos de Bariloche and El Bolson limited. Many areas can still only be reached by jeep or on horseback.
language
The dialect of the region differs only slightly from the standard Argentine of the Pampa region.
getting there
San Carlos de Bariloche is the undisputed hub of traffic in the region and therefore the best starting point for travel. The city has the fourth most important airport in Argentina (after those in Buenos Aires and that of Córdoba), and several major cities in Argentina are served. It can also be reached by bus and train (from Viedma) and is connected to the Argentine road network via good trunk roads.
mobility
There is a heavily frequented transport network in the vicinity of the tourist resorts.
Tourist Attractions
- Arrayanes forest, in the Los Arrayanes National Park.
activities
Because of the good tourist development of the region, almost all mountain sports are possible. You can hike, ride, climb (especially popular around 3 El Chalten) and mountain biking - with or without a guide. Paragliding and canoe rafting are also popular. You can bathe best in the smaller lakes, the larger and deeper ones are very cold in terms of temperature. In the glacier area it is possible to hike around on the glacier yourself with a guide.
kitchen
You can find many Central European specialties in the region, especially around San Carlos de Bariloche, a former Swiss colony. The chocolate industry in Argentina is also based there. There is also a lot of fish in the region.
nightlife
The undisputed center of nightlife is San Carlos de Bariloche with a huge number of large discos, bars and pubs, but most of them are aimed at a mainstream audience. The nightlife of El Bolsón is a little less active, but with opportunities for alternative sounds.
security
In terms of crime, San Carlos de Bariloche is comparable to any major city in Argentina during the season. The headlines were made by a raid on a group of tourists on a hiking trail in 2002, but this remains the only event of its kind in Argentina - so don't panic. The other areas of the area are very quiet, here you have to be more careful with nature, such as poisonous snakes.
climate
The southern Andes have a very humid climate that gets drier towards the east. Because of the high altitude, heat is almost never expected, even in summer - San Carlos de Bariloche has an average daily temperature in January of 21 ° C. In winter you have to expect cold temperatures of around 3 ° C during the day and down to -20 ° C at night.
trips
The proximity to the neighboring country Chile invites you to take a trip to this country. There you will find, among other things, spectacular volcanic cones such as the Villarica and the Osorno. From Bariloche a pass road leads over the north bank of the Nahuel Huapí and Villa la Angostura (Neuquén) to the neighboring country.
