Andria is a city of Puglia.

To know

Symbol of the city and of the whole Puglia is Castel del Monte, located on a hill just outside the town inside the Alta Murgia National Park, one of the World Heritage Sites declared byUNESCO.

Geographical notes

The city is located on the lower slope of the Murge, at 151 m a.s.l. and 10 km from the Adriatic Sea. It has an area of 408 km², which makes it the 18th Italian municipality by area. Near Andria there is a strong karst depression, or sinkhole called Gurgo. Inside the Gurgo, the numerous caves perhaps served as hypogea, while the Grotta della Trimoggia was used for the Marian cult. In the Gurgo the microclimate allows a not negligible variety of plants and we can also find the stramonium.

When to go

The climate is Mediterranean, with almost mild winters and hot, dry summers, conditions that determine the alternation of two seasons favorable to vegetation, such as spring and autumn.

Piazza Duomo Andria.jpg
  • 2 Cathedral, Piazza Duomo. The cathedral was built by Goffredo d'Altavilla, lord of Andria, between the end of the 11th century and the beginning of the 12th century on a previous church, dedicated to St. Peter, prior to the year 1000 and which today corresponds to the crypt of the building. This pre-Norman construction corresponds to the current presbytery and had the entrance at noon. The façade, designed by the architect Federico Santacroce, was built in its lower part in 1844; the upper part was completed in the twentieth century on the Romanesque model with a rose window and single lancet windows.

The bell tower that flanks the building is the result of two successive constructions: it stands on a square-based tower from the Lombard period (8th century), with narrow pointed windows and large mullioned windows on the first floor. The Normans raised it up to the octagonal back whose cusp culminates with a greenish rooster symbol of San Pietro, to indicate to the faithful the place where the church of San Pietro was located. The interior of the cathedral has three naves that overlook the transept (where there is a valuable wooden roof) through imposing pointed arches, the work of Alessandro Guadagno. Beyond the naves, ten side chapels, five on each side, reopened after the 2008 restorations.
