Geographical notes

Anguillara Veneta rises on a flat territory. It is crossed by the Adige river (which forms the southern border of the municipality), by the Gorzone canal and by minor waterways (various drainage drains). The climate is continental, characterized by hot and sultry summers and cold winters, but not particularly rigid, with frequent formation of fogs. Precipitation is distributed fairly evenly throughout the year, but in the summer, rainy phenomena of strong intensity accompanied by hail are possible.

Background

Traces of first human settlements date back to the Bronze Age. The frequent routes of the Adige deeply marked the territory of Anguillara, which for many centuries remained mainly marshy. It became a fief of the Carraresi family, the lords of Padua, of which the counts of Anguillara formed one of the most important branches together with the Papafavas. In the medieval period the town was the scene of several military clashes with neighboring powers (Ferraresi in primis). With the defeat of the Carraresi in 1405 by the Republic of Venice the territory became politically part of the Serenissima, while the Veneranda Arca del Santo of Padua obtained the economic ownership of the land (and kept it until 1974). In the 16th century, reclamation works began (cutting of the old Gorzon embankment in Taglio, 1557), which were completed only three centuries later.

The difficult economic situation, due to the predominantly agricultural economy and poor industrial development, encouraged a massive emigration abroad and towards the richer regions of the Italian north-west after World War II.
